Another Fun Day in Eyjafjörður
Today was a real treat! The weather was kinder than in previous days, clouds sitting a little higher, patches of sunshine sneaking through, and the southeast wind finally taking a breather. Add a calm, flat sea to the mix and you get the perfect recipe for a whale-watching adventure.

A Fantastic Day for an Adventure
The day began under a sky veiled with low clouds, with a steady south-southeast wind stirring up the sea and adding a touch of challenge to the journey, especially for those of us riding the Rib boats. Yet, that only heightened the sense of adventure. We set out determined, eager to encounter our beloved cetaceans.
It didn’t take long for the magic to begin. The first signs of life appeared in the form of shy harbour porpoises, gliding gracefully across the surface with their family, likely feeding together. Their presence filled us with excitement and anticipation. Soon enough, just north of the green buoy, we encountered our first humpback whale. Moving swiftly and diving repeatedly, it was clearly engaged in active feeding, likely chasing herring, surfacing only briefly before plunging back into the depths, reappearing minutes later in the distance…

A soup of life!! Sunny day with all little chicks chirping on Eyjafjörður. Humpbacks lunge feeding Minke’s being sneaky! What a great day for whale watching.

Today is a day unlike any other. The rare Black Moon rose above us, casting its quiet mystery while the sun shone brightly, warming the air like midsummer. Nature itself seemed to whisper an invitation to explore.
And what a journey it was. We witnessed the breathtaking majesty of a Blue Whale, its silvery back shimmering as it surfaced with power and grace. Soon after, families of long-finned pilot whales welcomed us with their gentle presence, followed by humpbacks dancing joyfully near Hjalteyri. Even a minke whale graced us briefly. Each encounter felt like a gift from the ocean.

The morning started with some of the thickest fog we seen in a very long time. We still managed to find two Humpback Whales in the fog before they disappeared. The fog lifted in the afternoon and we got close up encounters with two Humpback whales north of Hjalteryi, and had another three further away in the distance.

In the morning, the fjord was covered in thick fog, but by the afternoon and evening, the sun came out. On this trip, we saw humpback whales near the green buoy and later north of Hjalteyri. We were also lucky to spot harbour porpoises swimming close to the boat. The fjord was full of birdlife too, with guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, kittiwakes, Arctic skuas, and even a gannet.

The day started cold and cloudy, but by afternoon the sun was shining and the sea was calm.
Humpback whales were spotted near the green buoy, and many more appeared north of Hjalteyri, what a remarkable day in the fjord!

5-6 Humpback Whales all around the fjord, starting close to Gásir, 1 Minke Whale by green buoy and other whales kept moving, but we saw them mostly close to Hjalteyri, south, north and east of it. Perfect conditions today, sun and no wind, which makes up for a good start.

Today’s tour from Akureyri took us through Eyjafjörður, where we enjoyed abundant birdlife including fulmars, arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Around Hjalteyri, we encountered 7–8 humpback whales feeding dramatically alongside a minke whale, and on our return, a group of harbour porpoises briefly joined us. A truly lively day on the fjord, filled with seabirds and cetaceans.

Caught in the Act!
Here’s one of our favorite moments from today — a humpback whale surfacing with its massive snout while feeding, just a few meters from the boat! Encounters like this are what make Eyjafjörður so magical.

Strong winds in Eyjafjörður, but otherwise the weather was one of the warmest we’ve had in a while.
The day started with our old friend Bob, a Humpback whale who kept us company throughout the morning. In the afternoon, south of Hjalteyri, we spotted three more Humpbacks, including another familiar visitor, Disy.
The highlight came on the 5:00 pm tour, when a group of Northern bottlenose whales appeared south of Hrisey Island. Soon after, three Humpbacks showed up, with one feeding right beside our boat. On the way back to Akureyri, another three Humpbacks surfaced, this time lifting their tails before diving into the fjord.

The day was overcast with a gentle southerly breeze and calm seas, ideal for exploring the fjord.
Morning brought sightings of a Northern bottlenose whale mother and calf, plus a new Humpback we named Walter. In the afternoon, we met Lenka near shore and our old friend Bob, ending a perfect day.

Humpback whales around Hjalteyri, flat sea, very good conditions. 2 whales surface feeding in the end of our tour, then we turned back and found morther and a calf of Northern bottlenose whales just in the harbour area of Akureyri. Read the blog to find out more.

7+ Humpback Whales in a stretch of about 12 kilometres, two of those big rascals were around the Green Buoy, which is our favourite orientation point and south/north/east of Hjalteyri, there were at least 5 more. Swell and wind from the North made our journey a bit splashy, but who would care when you can see so many of these wonderful creatures? Read the blog to find out more.

The day consisted of a mix of sun and rain, but the fjord was almost like a lake today. We had the privilege to see a Northern Bottlenose whale with its calf, a Minke whale and several Humpback whales.

Awesome day with 6+ Humpback Whales, all located between the Green Buoy and Hjalteyri a lot of action from Bob and Disy, sunny with light breeze from the north later in the afternoon. Some luckers got to see pod of 5+ Northern Bottlenose Whales as well. Read the blog to find out more.
Saturday, 9 August 2025
Today we set out from the harbor under a cloudy sky, with a cool breeze and temperatures around 10°C. The sea was calm with just a gentle swell, creating the perfect setting for our whale-watching adventure.
Friday, 8 August 2025
The day began under grey clouds with a cool breeze and a temperature of 9°C. The sea was calm, setting a peaceful tone for the journey.
As we headed north, the tour quickly became unforgettable. We were treated to graceful arctic terns and northern fulmars flying alongside us. But the highlight came near Hjalteyri, where dozens of humpback whales surfaced around the boat. Calmly drifting among them, we witnessed their beauty up close, an awe-inspiring experience.
