Today we experienced strong winds in Eyjafjörður, but otherwise the weather was one of the warmest we’ve had in a while, reaching the temperature of 20°C. When we got towards the afternoon the clouds disappeared from the sky and the sun started to shine full blast.
In the morning we had one Humpback whale with us. It was popping up around us quite frequently. It was very nice for us that it was one of our old friends, Bob! It has been with us quite a while now but it seems that Bob doesn’t mind our company that much since it has stayed in the fjord.
In the afternoon, the winds had picked up quite a bit, so unfortunately, we had to cancel the express tours for the rest of the day. We were able to go with our Classic tour, and South of Hjalteyri we encountered three Humpback whales! Two were newer acquaintances, but one, that came close to us a couple of times, was another one of our old friends. It was Disy! This whale has also been with us for several weeks now.
The 17:00h tour had a special surprise in store for us. This time we sailed a little farther, heading south of Hrisey Island, where we were greeted by a group of Northern bottlenose whales! They swam close enough for us to truly admire them, even if they were a bit shy.
Not long after, three Humpback whales appeared. Although they didn’t show us their tails, one of them decided to feed right beside our boat, giving us an unforgettable moment.
And just when we thought the adventure was over, on our way back to Akureyri, up to three more Humpbacks surfaced. This time, they treated us to the iconic sight of their tails gracefully disappearing beneath the waves.
Tomorrow is another day full of possibilities, let’s see what nature has in store for us!
