Today was overcast with a light southerly breeze and only small waves, making perfect conditions for heading out into the fjord and enjoying some whale watching.
In the morning, we received news that a mother and calf of Northern bottlenose whales were near the harbour. We went to take a look, and some of us were lucky enough to spot them. From there, we headed east of the green buoy, where we encountered a Humpback whale we’d never seen before, its tail was unfamiliar to us. We decided to name it Walter and hope to see it again in the future. On our way back toward Akureyri Harbour, we saw the Northern bottlenose whales once more.
The afternoon tour began much the same way, with the Northern bottlenose whales near the harbour. We then returned to the east of the green buoy, where this time we met Lenka, a Humpback whale with a striking black tail pattern, swimming close to shore. Later, we spotted another Humpback, one we know well, Bob, a whale we’re especially fond of.
Bob did not let us down and started peduncle throwing many times. Yesterday, we saw very similar behaviour from this whale, and at this moment, it seems like it could be a male. We will have Gisela evaluate the photos very soon and come up with the resolution!
17:00 departure will be a bit choppy, but the whales love a bit rougher weather, and we are ready to see what they are up to!
All in all, it was a wonderful day out at sea, filled with beautiful encounters.
