A Beautiful Day in Eyjafjörður!
The morning greeted us with a bit strong south-southwest wind and partly cloudy skies, but that didn’t stop us from heading out in search of our beloved whales. With the moon just past its first quarter, the ocean had its own rhythm today, we had to venture that extra mile to find our whales, but every bit of the effort was worth it.
South of Hjalteyri, we reunited with Dissy, a humpback whale and an old friend who always keeps us on our toes. She has a knack for suddenly changing direction and reappearing where we least expect her, most likely while chasing schools of herring.
A little further, near Hrísey Island, we were lucky to meet Bob. This well-known and much-loved humpback whale never fails to entertain us. Today was no exception: Bob launched himself out of the water, showing off nearly his entire enormous body and leaving everyone absolutely speechless. Before saying goodbye, he treated us to one last spectacle, surfacing with his jaws wide open as he fed right beside the boat. What a fantastic farewell!
Our afternoon tours had better weather, with a bit more sun and a bit calmer wind, but were just as spectacular as the previous ones.
We encountered the same whales in roughly the same areas and spent a long time watching them feed and even… let’s say, “fertilise” the waters, much to the delight of the surrounding seabirds. Speaking of birds, along with the usual suspects (fulmars, Arctic terns, common eiders, loons, and gulls), today we also spotted a stunning northern gannet that stayed with us for quite some time.
Now we’re only waiting for the evening tour to put the final seal on what has been a truly unforgettable day!
