In the early morning, the fjord greeted us with a thick blanket of mist, turning our whale search into quite the adventure. But luck was on our side. Near the green buoy, we spotted our very first Humpback whale, and what a sight it was! The first thing we saw was its powerful tail slapping against the surface of the water, a behavior known as tail slapping. Not long after, a second and then a third Humpback appeared. We stayed with them for a while, watching as they fed, a truly humbling experience.

For bird lovers, the fjord didn’t disappoint either. We came across groups of Common guillemots, Razorbills, Northern fulmars, Black-legged kittiwakes, Arctic skuas, and even a majestic Gannet.

By the afternoon, the fog gave way to sunshine and a light breeze. Once again, our first encounter was with a Humpback near the green buoy, with whom we shared a special moment before continuing north towards Hjalteyri. There, two more humpbacks awaited us, and to make the day even more memorable, a group of Harbour porpoises swam playfully right next to our boat, rounding off a truly spectacular day at sea.

Whale watching here is more than just spotting marine giants; it’s about immersing yourself in the raw beauty of Iceland’s fjords, where every trip is different, and nature always has a surprise in store. If you ever dream of connecting with wildlife in its purest form, this is an experience you won’t want to miss. See you on the sea!
