Today is a day unlike any other...
The skies have aligned under a Black Moon, a celestial rarity that graces us only once every 33 months. And as if the heavens themselves were conspiring, the day unfolded with radiant sunshine and warmth more reminiscent of midsummer than of this northern latitude. It felt like a quiet invitation to adventure, and adventure we surely found.
Our journey began with an encounter that can only be described as awe-inspiring: the largest creature ever to exist on our planet, the Blue Whale. Time and again, we watched as it rose to the surface, exhaling great plumes of breath into the crisp air. Despite its name, the whale’s back revealed a silvery-grey sheen rather than true blue, a shimmering mystery of the ocean. What astonished us most was its speed, an elegant titan, moving with a grace and power beyond imagination.
But the sea was not done weaving its magic. A little further along, we met not one, but at least two families of long-finned pilot whales. Belonging to the dolphin family, they are second only to orcas in size, and yet their gentle presence filled us with wonder. Their distinctive rounded heads, holding the incredible "melon" the organ that they use for echolocation, gave them an almost otherworldly character. To be in their company felt like standing before ancient guardians of the deep.
As we ventured north, the celebration of life continued. Just off the coast of Hjalteyri, no fewer than five humpback whales danced in the waters. Our dear companions revealed their magnificent tails, one playfully slapping the surface, another feeding close enough for us to see the entirety of its massive face. The ocean seemed alive with joy, and amidst the excitement, even a minke whale made a fleeting appearance, truly the perfect final note to this symphony of encounters.
Days like this remind us why we do what we do. It was not just one of the most extraordinary days of the season in terms of sightings and species diversity, it was a gift. Our guests were enchanted, and we, even more so, humbled by the privilege of calling this our work.
Thank you, Pachamama, for reminding us of the vast, mysterious, and beautiful world we are lucky enough to witness.
