A Fantastic Day for an Adventure
The day began under a sky veiled with low clouds, with a steady south-southeast wind stirring up the sea and adding a touch of challenge to the journey, especially for those of us riding the Rib boats. Yet, that only heightened the sense of adventure. We set out determined, eager to encounter our beloved cetaceans.
It didn’t take long for the magic to begin. The first signs of life appeared in the form of shy harbour porpoises, gliding gracefully across the surface with their family, likely feeding together. Their presence filled us with excitement and anticipation. Soon enough, just north of the green buoy, we encountered our first humpback whale. Moving swiftly and diving repeatedly, it was clearly engaged in active feeding, likely chasing herring, surfacing only briefly before plunging back into the depths, reappearing minutes later in the distance.
Not far from there, near Hjalteyri, another humpback whale greeted us with breathtaking energy. Without warning, it breached, launching its massive body into the air and crashing down in a spectacular splash that left everyone speechless; few sights in nature rival the raw power and grace of a breaching humpback.
With our hearts full and spirits soaring, we began our return journey toward Akureyri, hugging the eastern coastline for shelter from the wind. Along the way, we made a quick stop at our hot water cascade, warming our fingers before continuing back, eager to discover what else the day might bring.
The adventure didn’t end there. In the afternoon, despite the weather turning a little windier and a touch rainier, our tours were equally rewarding. To our delight, we encountered the very same two humpback whales again. Their presence reminded us that, regardless of the conditions, these majestic giants continue their timeless routines: feeding, diving, and occasionally gifting us with unforgettable displays.
The drizzle and wind only added some adventure to the atmosphere, making every sighting feel even more intimate and special. It was a powerful reminder that nature has its own rhythm, and when we choose to step into it, we are always rewarded!!
