Hello, whale watchers!

A rainy day in Akureyri today. On the morning tour, it was windy and a bit choppy in the fjord, but we headed out on our smaller classic boat, Konsul. Everyone was ready with the raincoats we provided, and we set off.

It wasn’t long before we spotted our first humpback whale, around the town of Hjalteyri. It was Popeye, spending another day with us in the fjord! We stayed with it for a while before continuing north.

South of Hrísey, we found Dissy, one of our favourite humpbacks, whom we have known since 2023. Dissy was travelling quickly south, but we were still able to get some great views of her.

In the afternoon, the rain stopped for a while and the wind disappeared from the fjord. We found Popeye again around Hjalteyri, and while we were waiting for it to come back to the surface, we spotted a very large minke whale. We saw her twice, and the second time she surfaced very close to us, allowing us to see the characteristic white patches on her flippers.

Later, we left the area and, just a little further north, we found Dissy again, still travelling south.

The rain doesn’t stop us from enjoying the day and having great whale sightings in Eyjafjörður!
