Today we started our tour from within a movie… The whole fjord was like a mirror but covered in a thick fog. But that did not stop us. Our first sighting was a beautiful Humpback whale by the area of the green buoy. But it was not the only one, when the fog started lifting we realized there was a second one SE of Hjalteyri and were able to enjoy both of them quite nicely.
In the afternoon, the sun finally showed up and the clouds cleared from the sky, giving us a beautiful view of the mountains surrounding the fjord, slowly turning into autumn hues with little patches of snow sparkling on their slopes.
We left the harbour with the aim of finding the humpback whales we had spotted in the morning. South of Hjalteyri, we found Morrigan, one of the humpback whales we had seen earlier. We spent some lovely time with it before spotting a second humpback whale in the distance — Viper! So, we left Morrigan and headed over to see her. Due to time constraints, we only got to see her twice, but both encounters were very nice.
The birds in the fjord are still surprising us! We spotted Arctic Skuas, Fulmars, Kittiwakes, and, among a group of Common Eiders, a King Eider. How cool is that?
