The day began with perfect conditions: bright sunshine, calm seas, and not a ripple on the water. As we cruised through the fjord, the scenery suddenly transformed when a thick layer of sea fog rolled in. This type of fog forms when warm, moist air moves over much colder seawater, cooling rapidly until the moisture condenses into tiny droplets.

Out of the mist, a beautiful Minke whale appeared, delighting us by coming remarkably close to the boat before disappearing back into the fog. After exploring the fjord at Strytan we encountered several magnificent Northern Bottlenose Whales!

On our 1:00 PM tour, we headed out under sunny skies with a northerly wind. The conditions were pleasant, and on our way back we enjoyed a lovely ride in the sunshine.

As we got close to Hjalteyri, we spotted a few blows in the distance. We headed over to investigate and were excited to discover they were Northern Bottlenose Whales! These fascinating whales are deep divers, capable of diving for over an hour in search of squid and other prey. They are usually found in deeper offshore waters, so every sighting is something special.

We have been very lucky recently, as we have spotted Northern Bottlenose Whales several times over a short period. Although they do visit the area, they are not seen as regularly as some of our other whale species, making this encounter a real highlight of the tour.
