Hello everyone!

Today the fjord woke up very calm but cloudy. However, the sky slowlly cleared, and by the afternoon tours we were sailing under bright sunshine.

During the morning tour, we spotted two minke whales near the green buoy, just about 30 minutes from Akureyri Harbour. We spent some time with them, enjoying their smooth and elegant swimming. A few times, the whales came close enough to check us out, and thanks to the clear water we were even able to see their bodies beneath the surface. After spending some time with them, we continued sailing a little farther north, where we also encountered a group of cute harbour porpoises, including several calves.

On the afternoon tour, we had to travel a bit farther to find the minke whales, spotting them near the town of Hjalteyri. This time they seemed to be a bit hungrier, giving us the chance to witness their feeding behaviour. One of the minkes was lunge-feeding close to the surface, rolling on its side as it lunged for prey. Minke whales have a reputation for being one of the trickiest species to spot on whale-watching tours, but every now and then they surprise us with their curious behaviour, and that's one of the many reasons we love them.

Our RIB boat ventured a little farther and was rewarded with a sighting of a pod of white-beaked dolphins, also accompanied by calves, east of Hrísey Island. This is no coincidence, we are right in the middle of the breeding season for Odontocetes, making it a wonderful time to observe mothers and calves in the fjord.
