What an amazing summer day in the fjord!
Even in the morning, the fjord was completely covered in fog. But within just one hour, the sky cleared, and as we sailed out into the calm waters, we were surrounded by an incredible peacefulness. Birds were resting on the water, enjoying the quiet morning, while we slowly made our way southeast of Hrísey in search of our first cetacean of the day.
And then… there she was our famous humpback whale, Disy! 🐋
She surfaced about every six minutes, giving us the most beautiful and peaceful encounters. During one of her close approaches, I honestly think I could even feel her spout on my face! What an incredible moment seeing such a magnificent cetacean so close to the boat, in such calm conditions, and seemingly completely at peace with our presence.
It was one of those magical encounters that reminds you how special the fjord and its wildlife really are. 💙
We headed out on our afternoon tour under sunny skies, although the Northwind was quite strong and the sea was wavy in the beginning. After passing Hjalteyri, the conditions improved, with less wind and partly cloudy skies making for a much calmer ride.
Our highlight of the day came east of Hrísey, close to the cliffs, where we encountered our familiar humpback whale, Disy. She was in a calm mood, surfacing peacefully and staying relatively close to the boat.
Disy seemed especially curious today, with several surfacings where she appeared to be checking us out. Between her calm dives, we were treated to those beautiful, powerful breaths that are so characteristic of humpback whales.
It was a lovely encounter and a great afternoon to be out observing these amazing animals in their natural environment.
