The morning started with sunny skies and flat seas and as we approached the area pf Svalbarðseyri, where we spotted a humpback whale going south, we followed it until almost the harbour of Akureyri! After spending some quality time with this humpback we decided to explore a little bit more and we found a minke whale between Svalbarðseyri and the green buoy.

We headed out for our afternoon trip under sunny skies, with only a slight wind creating very good conditions for whale watching. It was one of those lucky August days that reminds us just how beautiful late summer can be in Iceland.
Even though August is already the beginning of autumn here, the landscape still has that wonderful late-summer feeling and the surrounding mountains looked stunning in the sunshine.

As we travelled south of Hjalteyri, we were lucky enough to find Humpback whales feeding in the area. We watched them surface again and again, with both whales showing off their beautiful flukes as they prepared for their next dives.
The scenery made the encounter even more special. Behind the whales, the skyline of Akureyri created a stunning backdrop, bringing together some of the very best things about a day on Eyjafjörður.
Whales, mountains, sea and the beautiful town of Akureyri.
🐋✨ At 17:00, something incredible happened…

As we arrived north of Hrisey, we spotted a humpback whale, Disy, feeding. She seemed a little annoyed by a group of white-beaked dolphins that had decided to join her. Disy was trumpeting, almost as if she was telling them, “Go away!” 🐬

But then, another whale approached the boat .So close that I could feel its blow and see its massive body passing by.

It was my old friend, Piccolo. ❤️🐋

He went under the boat and then popped up right in front of us, almost as if he wanted to say hello to everyone. And then… he put on an absolutely amazing show!

Tail throwing, tail slapping, huge splashes — it was as if Piccolo had also decided that he had enough of those dolphins! 😂🐬🐋

What an unforgettable encounter. Seeing a familiar whale return like this, so close to the boat, is something truly special. ❤️

Some days at sea are simply magical. 🌊🐋✨
