In the morning we left Akureyri in nice, calm conditions and headed out into Eyjafjörður. It didn't take long before we got a big surprise we spotted a small group of Northern bottlenose whales near Hrísey! These whales usually live far out at sea in deep water, so seeing them in the fjord is really unusual. We had two great sightings as they came up to breathe together, giving everyone plenty of time to enjoy watching them before they went down for a long, deep dive. While we were waiting to see if they would come back up, we spotted a Humpback whale almost straight away! It was a great way to carry on the tour, and the Humpback stayed with us for a while, giving us several lovely sightings as it travelled through the fjord.
In the evening tour, we didn’t need to go any further than the town of Svalbarðseyri to find two humpback whales. One of them was easy to spot, as it stayed below the surface for only a few minutes at a time and surfaced not far from the boat. The other one, however, was only seen once. Both whales were feeding, and one of them was rolling and performing some pectoral slapping.
Our evening tour took us north through Eyjafjörður in a bit of a rough sea. We headed towards Hjalteyri, one of the deepest parts of the fjord, where we often find whales.
It didn't take long before we spotted a humpback whale! The whale was feeding, spending only a short time at the surface before diving down again. Even though it didn't stay at the surface for long, we still had several great sightings. It's always amazing to watch these gentle giants feeding in the fjord.
Despite the choppy sea, we had a really nice evening out on the water.
