Windy but sunny conditions in the fjord today. We headed out this morning with two of our classic boats, Hólmasól and Konsul, as well as one of our RIB boats, Diplomat.
It looks like the whales are starting to come a bit closer, and we didn’t have to travel very far before spotting two humpback whales. We found them just south of the town of Hjalteyri. Even though there were two humpbacks, we spent most of our time with one of them, as it kept surfacing close to us. Without having to move around much, we simply enjoyed watching the whale on its own terms.
After spending some time with the humpbacks, we headed back to Akureyri.
In the afternoon, we went out again, this time only with Konsul. It was raining at the beginning of the tour, but since it wasn’t very cold, our adventurous passengers stayed outside for most of the trip. Once again, we encountered a humpback whale and a minke whale just south of Hjalteyri. The humpback approached us a few times before making a few deep dives and then calmly travelling south. We slowly made our way back alongside it while keeping a safe distance.
At first, the minke whale was quite far away and very close to the shoreline, but at one point it surfaced right in front of us. However, as soon as we saw it appear, it disappeared again.
Today we saw northern fulmars, Arctic terns, black-legged kittiwakes, black-headed gulls and Arctic skuas.
During the midnight tour, the wind went down and we saw hundred of puffins. We were lucky to find two Humpback whales near Hjalteyri, and Harbor porpoises near the green bouey.
