Today, in the morning we had perfect conditions for spotting the wildlife! A bit over-casted and such glassy sea surface that we could spot every ripple. Our morning tour we spent in the area just south of Hjalteyri, in the company of harbor porpoises and 2 sleepy humpback whales. While waiting for humpbacks to surface, porpoises were coming super close to our boat and it was so calm, we could see them under the surface! Humpbacks fluked up few times and 1, named Bob, in one moment, fully breached! We also enjoyed watching variety of birds around us: Arctic terns, kittiwakes, great skuas, cormorants, razorbills, black and common guillemots, and Atlantic puffins!
In the 5 pm tour, the wind picked up a bit, but the sightings remained very good. Soon after leaving the harbour in the town of Svalbarðseyri, we spotted a minke whale. We stayed with it for a while, and suddenly it came up lunge feeding.
After that, we continued travelling north, by Hjalteyri, where we soon spotted a humpback whale we know as Umbrella. It wasn't very easy to follow, so we decided to continue farther north until we found two more humpbacks, Bob and Poppy. We spent some time with them, and the time passed so quickly.
On the way back, we found Umbrella again, and this time it surprised us by breaching several times, followed by tail throws and even pectoral slaps. What a way to end the trip!
Finally, in the evening, we went back to the same area, and this time we found two humpback whales, Bob and Umbrella, busy feeding together among large flocks of seabirds. Even though it was cloudy, we were still able to enjoy the beautiful colours of the sunset.
