The morning started with glassy sea which made excellent conditions to spot any movement at the sea surface. On our 9 o’ clock tour were so lucky to spot our first minke whale in an area called Bakkaáll, here we also spotted a very sleepy humpback whale. We decided to sail further north hoping to have the chance to see some other animals, and then we were very lucky with three humpback whales traveling together, in the area of Hjalteyri. The tour was never boring because here we also spotted another minke whale, who came quite close to our boat!
On the tour at 13h the sea got a bit choppy but we found humpback whales northeast of Hjalteyri. First 2 whales were both diving for quite a long time, weren’t showing much of their body and were surfacing for just 1 breath, so we decided to go check out the others, closer to the land, at Rauðavik. There we spotted 3 whales, of which 1 was lazy tail slapping, and a lot of excited Arctic terns feeding, so it seems we just came at the end of some feeding action. We decided to stay watching the two whales who were together. The one that was tail slapping, was then raising both of its huge pectoral fins high above the surface, like it’s waiving to us and showing its belly. Beautiful day at the sea!
