The north wind created choppy sea conditions today, which made it a bit more difficult for spotting the animals. We did find a humpback whale, quite up north, south of Grenivik. It was our well known humpback we named Proppy. It was diving for 7 minutes, but was raising its tail multiple times. Not only that, but in one moment it raised its both flippers hight above the surface, “waving”, slapping and then rolling around!
On the way back, we saw few harbor porpoises next to Hjalteyri. We also spotted 2 minke whales, around green buoy. We stopped for a bit to see them again, but had not much luck - both individuals surfaced up for just 2 breaths and disappeared out of our sight in fast speed. On our tour at 13h we were more lucky. We found 3 humpback whales north of Grenivik. 1st whale was diving for 13minutes but our patience paid off - we saw it just in front of our boat and it fluked up! 2nd individual surprised us by surfacing (after a 15mins dive!) close to our boat, and also raised its fluke hight in the air. The 3rd individual was Proppy, which gave us a great sighting - fluking up on every dive, and staying just around 2 minutes under surface. We also saw a bit of bird action - skuas chasing kittiwakes.
On our evening tours we found a total of 4 Humpback Whales, 2 of them in Raudavik and 2 more feeding at Höfdi. We could even see their extended throats full of fish and water. And of course the amazing midnight sun in our faces.
There was 2 Minke Whales feeding at the surface surrounded by hundreds of birds also, just north of Hjalteyri.
