We started the morning on our 9 o’clock classic tour with glass-like seas, so we knew that if something was coming to take a breath at the surface we would have seen it. After some time sailing we finally reached the town of Hjalteyri, were we spotted our first minke whale; shortly after another one popped up in the same area of the first one! This two sightings were already very great, but we were even more lucky with a humpback whale close to Hrolfssker.
The humpback whale moved towards Hjalteyri in the afternoon and that’s where our afternoon were so lucky to spot it! It was moving very fast but also fluking a lot, we had the chance to see it from quite close.
This afternoon, we set sail in calm conditions, eager to see what the fjord had in store for us. It did not take long before we had our first exciting encounter—a minke whale!
The whale surfaced several times all around the boat, giving every guest a fantastic view. We were especially lucky, as minke whales are known to be quite elusive and can often be difficult to observe for extended periods. Watching this individual repeatedly appear near us was a real treat.
A little later, we spotted some tiny harbour porpoises. These small cetaceans are also very shy and elusive, so seeing them several times close to the boat was another special moment. To make the sighting even more memorable, we noticed a young calf travelling alongside the adults.
After enjoying these encounters, we decided to head farther north in search of even larger cetaceans. Once again, luck was on our side. One of our guests spotted a humpback whale swimming in the distance. As we slowly approached, we were rewarded with excellent views of this magnificent animal.
It was fascinating to compare the different species we had seen throughout the trip—from the tiny harbour porpoises, the smallest cetaceans in the fjord, to the much larger and powerful humpback whale. Seeing such diversity in a single afternoon was truly remarkable.
What an amazing day out on the water, filled with unforgettable wildlife encounters and happy guests!
