Today was overcast all day, with low hanging clouds. A light drizzle of rain during the morning and afternoon also. Northerly winds have been dominant all day, therefore sea conditions have been a little choppy.
During the morning, our large vessel Holmasol found a minke whale north of Svalbardseyri. It was very fun to watch it surface feeding, rolling and it even showed us its tail above the surface in one moment! After that, further out, east of the green buoy, 2 humpback whales. The passengers on the express tour have been very lucky to watch one humpback breach just 20 m in front of them! There was also another minke whale south Hjalteyri, which we smelled many times.
On our classic tour at 13h, first we were watching a younger minke whale in the area north west of green buoy. After that we sailed to an area of Rauðavik, were we heard are a few humpback whales. We when we arrived, soon we were surrounded with 4 humpback whales feeding and a lot of feeding frenzy birds. In the distance, there were other 2 humpback whales also. One of the whales came twice just next to our boat! On the way back, just next to Hjalteyri, we saw a pod of few harbour porpoises. What an amazing tour!
On our tour at 17h, we went back to the area of Rauðavik. This time, the humpback whales grouped together 4+2, and also surfaced up very close to our boat. We were the only boat out and there was no wind in that area, so we were enjoying the sounds of just wildlife around us. Again, on the way back, saw a pod of cute harbor porpoises next to Hjalteryi.
During the whole day, we spotted different bird species as well: black and common guillemot, kittiwakes, Northern fulmars, razorbill, black-backed gulls, skuas, Arctic terns, Eider ducks.
