What an amazing day today!
We went out on our Classic tours at 9h and 13h, and both were such a blast!
Our morning tour started with a sighting of a few harbor porpoises on the west side of the fjord, near green buoy. Just south of Hjalteyri, we found our well known humpback whale Proppy. We watched it for a few surfacing and then headed just north of Hjalteryji, few hundred meters away, to see another humpback over there. This humpback has an “X” scar on the lower side of its flukes. In one moment it went south and joined Proppy. When they met, they made physical contact, rolled a bit and made peculiar sounds. Very soon they synchronized - started swimming parallel and diving at the same time. On the way back we encountered numerous pods of harbour porpoises and marine birds actively fishing - Arctic terns, kittiwakes, black and common guillemots and Northern fulmars.
Our first Cetaceans’ encounter on our 13h tour were also cute harbor porpoises. After that, we found a humpback whale Proppy, at Rauðuvik. We watched it for a bit and then moved approx. 300-400 meters closer to the shore, SW, near Arnarnsevik, to watch a minke whale. There was also a pod of harbor porpoises, scattered around, fishing. After having a very good look of a minke, and porpoises, we headed north again, toward Hauganes, where we spotted the blows of 2 humpback whales together! That was the highlight of the tour! Two humpback whales were super close to each other lunge feeding in a slow motion at the surface, with numerous of feeding frenzy birds - Arctic terns and kittiwakes! They were also rolling on a side and raising their flukes half way above the surface. On our way back, we were seeing few pods of harbor porpoises, along the way, of which 1 pod was of 12-15 individuals, feeding together with a lot of birds. There were guillemots & terns everywhere! We even saw a great skua. Some porpoises leaped completely above the surface, so we could see they cute sturdy bodies fully.
All in all, a great day, full of life, action, beautiful weather and perfectly calm sea!
