Hello everybody!
Today we had an amazing day at sea: sunny, with not too much wind. We started the day with our 9:00 am Classic Tour. Despite the cold, most of our adventurous passengers stayed outside, and they were the ones who spotted our first species of the day: a small group of Harbour porpoises feeding together with Arctic terns and kittiwakes.
Then, by Hjalteyri, we spotted our first Humpback whale. Once again, Proppy wanted to stay in the fjord one more day. It was diving for short periods and at some point started tail-throwing a few times, it has been very active recently! While we were watching Proppy, our captain spotted another humpback north of Hjalteyri, so we left Proppy to see the new whale. This time, the whale was diving for longer periods, making the sighting a bit trickier, so after a while we returned to Proppy for one more encounter.
In the afternoon tour, we found 3 humpback whales near Rauðuvik. We had time to observe 2 of them closer (of which one was Proppy), while the 3rd one swam further north, so we were seeing it from a bit of distance. On the way back we spend a bit of time with one more humpback whale, next to Hjalteyri. During the whole trip we were seeing smaller pods of harbour porpoises, scattered along the fjord, actively hunting, as well as quite a lot of bird action.
The birds were in big flocks, very actively fishing and interesting to watch. At the beginning of the morning tour, very close to the boat, we saw three Arctic skuas chasing a kittiwake. We also saw common and black guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, Arctic terns and long tailed ducks.
