Windy but warm day with a lot of Humpbacks
We had warm winds from the south, ensuring we didn´t get too cold, but there was quite a lot of wind in the fjord today. And to make things a little harder, we had a lot of swell and white caps. But it didn’t stop the humpback whales from hanging out in the fjord today.
In the morning, we found our first humpback whales south of Hjalteryi. As it was very windy in the area, we decided to continue a bit further north, trying to escape the wind. North of Hjalteryi, we found at least four other Humpback whales, and two of them were very familiar to us, as it was humpbacks we knew as Piccolo and White Fang. Just as we were about to leave, White Fang came up really close to us, passing right in front of the boat and giving us a big fluke goodbye. On the way home, we had to make several stops as Humpbacks came up on our way towards Akureyri. In total, there must have been around nine Humpback whales around the fjord.
During the afternoon tours, we headed straight out to Rauðavík, where we had a whale soup during the morning, only to find … Another whale soup. We saw around us 7 Humpback whales, feeding on and off. And Piccolo making friends. Since it spent the whole afternoon in the company of another whale. But that was not all. On our way back home, we encountered 1 more Humpback, making a total of 8 Humpbacks during our tour, which was very gently swimming south (N Green buoy).
