Amazing day in the fjord, humpbacks and the big blue!

This morning began with cloudy skies and a light northern breeze, but sea conditions were calm enough for us to head out into Eyjafjörður in search of whales.

Not long into the trip, between the Green buoy and Hjalteyri, we spotted several blows. Two Humpback whales appeared, lifting their tails and astonishing us with their massive size. Our smaller boat ventured further north, near Hauganes, where another Humpback was sighted.

The real surprise came on the way back. Just about a mile from the harbour, we saw a huge blow — it was a Blue whale, the largest animal on Earth. While the Humpbacks had already impressed us with their size, encountering a Blue whale was on an entirely different level.

The afternoon brought steady rain, determined to accompany us on our journey, but it never dampened our spirits. By the green buoy, we were thrilled to meet the Blue Whale again. It travelled alongside us for quite some time, surfacing gracefully at “3 o’clock” over and over, as if keeping a rhythm with our boat. That became our favourite phrase of the day.

When we reached Hjalteyri, we finally let the gentle giant continue its path while we set out to look for other cetaceans. Heading south soon, we spotted a Humpback Whale, wich appeared, surfacing so close that it gave us a truly special encounter.

Today was definitely one of those days you simply never forget.
