Calm Sea and Gentle Giants. What more could we ask for?
Today, even though the sky was draped in thick clouds, the fjord was completely calm-like a mirror, without a breath of wind. Sailing in such conditions is pure joy, and it makes spotting whales a little easier too.
Today, just south of Hjalteyri, we were treated to the sight of up to six different Humpback whales. The fjord is brimming with food for these gentle giants, and from time to time, we could even see small schools of fish breaking the surface. Seabirds like common guillemots, razorbills, northern fulmars…abundant and ever-watchful, guided us as well, diving and circling above, ready to snatch up the leftovers from the whales’ feast. During the morning in the way back, we spotted a tiny Minke whale.
