An Unforgettable Day in Eyjafjörður!

The day kicked off grey and rainy, with low clouds and that steady drizzle that just makes you want to stay in bed. Luckily, there was no wind and the temperature was surprisingly pleasant, perfect conditions to set out on our mission: finding our beloved whales!

Funny enough, the moment we sailed out of the harbour, the rain stopped and the clouds lifted, revealing stunning views of the fjord and the incredible landscape we’re lucky enough to call our “office.”

The whales didn’t keep us waiting long. Between the green buoy and Hjalteyri, we spotted spouts rising from the surface, three humpback whales in total! It was pure magic. We even got to witness some close-up lunge feeding, with massive whale mouths bursting through schools of fish, while seabirds swirled in excitement above them.

The excitement didn’t end there; a curious minke whale made an appearance, giving us a perfect chance to compare its size with the much larger humpbacks. On the way back to Akureyri, a small pod of harbour porpoises swam alongside the boat, and we couldn’t resist a quick stop at our favourite hot-water waterfall for a few more snapshots before heading in to gear up for the afternoon tours.

And the afternoon didn’t disappoint! We found the whales again near Hjalteyri, still busy with their lunge feeding. This time, though, there were at least eight humpbacks around us, so many spouts and tails that we didn’t know where to look!

The birdlife also put on a show: geese flying in perfect V-formation, swans, fulmars, arctic terns, common guillemots, shearwaters… all adding to the magic of the moment.

What a day; incredible tours and memories we won’t soon forget!
