Today is the first day of August, and it truly felt like summer, sunny, warm, and completely calm, with the sea as smooth as a mirror.
In the morning, we spotted a Minke whale between the green buoy and Hjalteyri. We saw it several times, and it was such a cool experience. Later, we received reports from other boats further north in Rauðavík about at least four Humpback whales. They were amazing to watch, sometimes surfacing together and diving in unison, tails in the air. A wonderful morning with some fantastic sightings.
The afternoon tours were full of excitement, even as the weather started to shift. The skies turned greyer and a southern wind picked up seemingly growing stronger by the minute. But that didn’t stop the whales!
Just north of Hjalteyri, we reunited with the humpback whales from this morning, perhaps five or six of them, calmly feeding and treating us to the soothing sound of their breaths. Each tail had its own unique color pattern, and they were absolutely captivating to watch. There’s something almost meditative about watching these gentle giants feed, surfacing and diving in their own rhythm, completely unbothered by our presence. Some came up closer, others stayed a bit farther off, but they all gave us moments to remember. It’s these kinds of sightings that make every tour feel special.
Before heading back to the harbor, we made a scenic stop by the hot water waterfall; a local gem where geothermal water flows directly into the sea. There, we caught sight of a few elegant swans and plenty of noisy gulls adding their voices to the experience. It was a peaceful and fitting end to an afternoon full of whale magic and northern charm.
