Today we sailed out in true Icelandic weather. The temperature was around 15°C, with a light rain at first. But soon, the clouds cleared and the sun came out, bathing everything in beautiful light—a perfect day at sea.
We headed north, and as soon as we passed the green buoy, we were greeted by incredible spouts of humpback whales! Not just one, but four individuals surrounded us, with two of them traveling closely together. In the distance, we spotted even more spouts, all humpbacks.
Then suddenly, something extraordinary happened.
One of the whales decided to give us a real show: a full-body breach! And not just once - it breached again and again. To make it even more magical, another whale joined in, and we watched two humpbacks breaching almost in sync. This is such a rare and special sight that we were left completely speechless.
In the distance, we also saw tail throws, the fastest whale behavior and one individual tail-slapping repeatedly, perhaps calling to another. In total, we had around seven humpback whales around us.
Guests also spotted small dorsal fins popping up on the surface - harbour porpoises quietly gliding by.
The whales were heading north toward Hjalteyri, and on our way back to the harbor, we had a farewell moment as another humpback appeared, heading south, and gave us a beautiful goodbye fluke.
During the midnight tour, we were surrounded by many whales and even got the chance to see a group of Northern bottlenose whales near Strytan. The sun was shinning and the weather was quite warm, a beautiful way to end this day.
What an unforgettable day at sea!
