Sunshine, Whales and Surprises in the Fjord!

We’re stunned — two sunny mornings in a row! A light southern breeze is gently shifting north throughout the day, but the sea remains flat as a pancake, making it easy to spot anything that breaks the surface.

This morning brought us one surprise after another in our beloved fjord. We headed north and, just past Svalbarðseyri, met our first guest, a minke whale cruising toward the opposite shore. Not long after, a second whale appeared! We're still debating whether it was another minke or perhaps a young sei whale, but we managed to snap a few good photos.

As we neared the mouth of the fjord, a pod of around ten harbour porpoises treated us to their speedy surfacing as they fed near the boat. Then, past Hjalteyri near Hauganes, five magnificent humpbacks stole the show with their elegant dives and synchronized movements. One even breached, leaping out of the water and leaving us absolutely speechless.

We have also spotted group of 5 Northern Bottlenose Whales from afar close to strýta diving spot. These rare species are excellent divers which makes them quite hard to follow and watch, diving longer than 2 hours and in the depths of over 2 kilometres. Over here in the shallow waters, we are not experiencing such long dives, but it still takes considerably longer than any other cetacean we have been seeing recently. Hopefully we will get lucky and see them up close one more time.

What a morning! We’re all set for the afternoon tours — let’s see what the fjord has in store next!
