Sunshine, Whales & Wild Moments in the Fjord
The sun is out in Akureyri today and we almost forgot what that feels like! With a calm morning, gentle south-southwesterly winds, and high clouds drifting by, it was the perfect setup for a whale-watching adventure.
We set course north, heading out of our beloved Eyjafjörður, and nature didn’t take long to show off: a skua swooped in to steal food from a black legged kittiwake mid-air — raw and wild, just how we like it!
Near Hjalteyri, we spotted our first humpback whale, fully focused on feeding and completely unbothered by our presence. A bit further north, we encountered another — a familiar pair from the day before, now heading in separate directions. We spent quality time with both, especially the one heading south, before making our way back.
We wrapped up the trip with a stop by our famous hot water waterfall, returning to Akureyri full of excitement and already wondering what the afternoon will bring.
Afternoon update: South-western wind persists around the green buoy, it got cloudier and more whales popped up, around Hauganes 5+ Humpback Whales, most actively feeding every minute or so, absolutely stunning show, many close encounters, wind should go down later, so feel free to join us at 20:30 or 21:00 as it looks very promising!
