Today we had high clouds but no fog. Although the sun didn’t make an appearance, the sea conditions were great for heading out into Eyjafjörður to look for whales.

In the morning, we spotted a Humpback whale traveling north near Hjalteyri. Later, some of the RIB boats headed northeast of Hrísey, where they encountered another Humpback whale. This one was particularly large and impressive. It was doing shallow dives, so we didn’t see its fluke, but it surfaced several times very close to us, giving everyone a fantastic view. We also saw Harbour porpoises, Minke whales, and a few White-beaked dolphins. A wonderful morning overall, now let’s see what the afternoon brings!

Adding Northern Bottlenose Whales seen on our 9:00 classic departure to the cast list. They were just by Gásir.

By the afternoon, the skies cleared and the sun offered a bit of warmth. The whales remained far from Akureyri, so we returned to the northeast of Hrísey. There, we spotted several large Humpback whales, many of which showed their flukes as they dove, a beautiful sight! The tours ran a bit longer than usual, but no one minded; being out at sea and enjoying such amazing encounters made it all worthwhile. Also we spotted some White-beaked dolphins.

3 Humpbacks
North of Hrísey late in the afternoon and White beaked dolphins again!
