Wind, Waves, and Whales: A Wild Day on the Water
Today brought one of those raw, exhilarating days at sea — the kind that reminds you just how alive the ocean is.
North of the buoy, in choppy, wind-swept waters, we had our first sighting: a Humpback Whale (DISY) moving steadily through the swell. Despite the rough conditions, it surfaced with that unmistakable grace — a powerful exhale, a roll of the back, and then the majestic lift of its flukes as it dove.
But the real highlight came not long after.
Out of the rolling grey-blue came an unforgettable encounter: six Northern Bottlenose Whales, unusually close and surprisingly calm given the conditions. These deep-diving, rarely seen whales lingered near us long enough for a truly special moment — surfacing in a loose group, their blunt heads and quiet presence somehow grounding amid the wind and waves.
The weather never settled; the wind stayed up and the sea grew more restless, but now and then the sun broke through in golden flashes, lighting up the water and giving us brief windows of calm and clarity.
It was a day of wild elements and rare encounters — not an easy one, but absolutely unforgettable.
