Another Magical Morning in Eyjafjörður
We don’t want to sound repetitive or overly dramatic, but nature has truly been spoiling us with the most incredible mornings lately.
Today began with low clouds and barely a breeze. A light shower greeted us early on, but the weather soon cleared, and the sun made a welcome return.
Our first sighting came quickly, just north of Svalbarðseyri, we spotted a minke whale calmly cruising along the surface. Not long after, in the same area, we encountered a group of harbor porpoises. Always discreet, yet such a joy to watch as they move gracefully through the water.
But the highlight of the morning was still ahead.
South of Hjalteyri, we found three humpback whales. Two of them were swimming together for a while, and among them was our dear friend Proppy, easily recognized by the scar on her dorsal fin. It was an unforgettable experience, with close encounters that left us in awe of these majestic creatures. There was two lucky departures to also spot our cutest and one of the rarest visitors in the fjord - pod of 6 Northern Bottlenose Whales just next to the fishing harbour - super close to the town of Akureyri. These whales are absolutely adorable with their bulbous forehead and beak like dolphins have. They are toothed whales and nearly never show up in such shallow waters like we have here in Eyjafjörður.
We can’t wait for the afternoon tours to continue learning more about them and to simply enjoy their extraordinary presence in this stunning fjord.
This afternoon's tours have been just as extraordinary as those in the morning.
The skies turned a bit cloudier, and the sea showed a little more character, but the magic never faded.
Once again, we had the incredible fortune of encountering the same humpback whales from this morning, now swimming independently, each charting its own course. Watching them in different settings reminded us just how dynamic and awe-inspiring these giants truly are.
Our wonderful guests not only witnessed unforgettable moments but also had the chance to learn more, ask questions, and deepen their connection with these majestic creatures.
Now, only the sunset tours remain to close this truly remarkable day on the ocean.
