Another Sunny Day in Our Beloved Fjord!!

With the waning moon at 77%, we kicked off the morning under a layer of low-hanging clouds and a fair bit of humidity. A gentle northern breeze swept across the water, but not enough to keep us from enjoying a fantastic morning with our favorite animals.

We set sail, ready for adventure. The kind of day that practically begs you to stay on deck, eyes glued to the surface, watching for the slightest ripple. The activity of Arctic terns, fulmars, and other seabirds hinted at a feast happening below the waves.

It didn’t take long before we spotted our first cetacean of the day near Hjalteyri, a humpback whale, actively feeding. Not only did we get to spend time in its company, but we were also treated to some unusual behavior! This beauty was tail-slapping and side-feeding, all while proudly showing off its massive pectoral fins and the bumpy tubercles (each with its own hair follicle) on its head.

On our way back, we made a quick stop to observe more seabirds including guillemots and were lucky enough to spot a synchronized family of harbor porpoises gracefully moving through the water. A true visual treat!

On our afternoon tours, the weather has stayed mostly sunny, although a bit of wind has picked up, something that’s become quite typical in recent days. Compared to our calmer morning tours, spotting wildlife was a little more challenging, but we were lucky to witness a wonderfully active humpback whale again by Hjalteyri.

As soon as we arrived, the whale greeted us with an impressive breach right next to our boat Konsul. We spent some time with it, watching as it displayed other amazing behaviors like tail slapping, always a thrill to see up close!

While we waited quietly for her to resurface, we had an unexpected surprise, a juvenile gannet flew overhead! It's not a common sight in the fjord, and we felt truly fortunate..

Nature never fails to surprise us!
