This Sunday was cloudy but dry, and the sea conditions were ideal for heading out to explore the incredible wildlife in Eyjafjörður, the fjord we visit daily.

Our morning started with the sighting of a Humpback Whale near Hjalteyri. While observing this majestic creature, we noticed another blow on the horizon. We approached and discovered it was another Humpback Whale. We were fortunate to see their tails. Each whale’s tail has unique patterns, allowing us to identify them individually. Then we began our journey back to Akureyri and when we thought that our whale watching for the morning was over a Minke Whale appeared close to town. True to its nature, it was a bit shy, but our photographer managed to capture a few shots of it.

In the afternoon, we headed out again and saw another Minke Whale in the same area where the one had been spotted in the morning, possibly the same individual. We continued our tour and soon spotted another Minke Whale near the Green buoy, though this one was also quite shy. Hoping to see larger whales, we decided to head further north. We reached an area near Hrísey. There, we encountered two Humpback Whales. We chose to stay with one and enjoy the experience. It was a fantastic sighting, as the whale stayed close to the boat and surfaced frequently, giving us a real sense of its impressive size. On our way back, we spotted another Humpback Whale and a Minke Whale north of Hjalteyri. They appeared to be feeding.

Overally really good day on the water, all sightings adding up to 6+ large whales. 3 Humpbacks, 3 Minke Whales.
