With the waning moon overhead and the longest day of the year fast approaching in the Northern Hemisphere, conditions couldn’t be better to spot our favorite ocean giants! Calm seas and barely a whisper of wind — let’s go!

We set our course northward, sailing into the mouth of this incredible fjord. Right away, harbor porpoises greet us, darting through the water alongside a lively group of seagulls and northern terns indulging in a mid-morning feast.

Just SW of Hjalteyri, we spot our first humpback whale. Not far off — around 500 meters — we encounter another, and it’s a familiar face: Disy! She’s been known in these waters for four years now, a distinctive female marked by the scars across her torso. And today, Disy puts on quite the show — tail slapping the surface with powerful blows, leaving us in awe of her sheer majesty.

On the return journey, we’re treated to more porpoises and a sky full of seabirds — the fjord is a full-on buffet at the moment! After a quick detour to visit the steaming thermal waterfall, it’s time to head back to port, full of excitement for what the afternoon may bring...

This afternoon was just as magical as the morning, with close encounters in the very same area. We even got a clear look at the pleats on a humpback whale’s lower jaw as it fed just beneath the surface—an awe-inspiring sight up close!
