Did Iceland teleport itself to some other location? This feels more like it, no wind, sunshine everywhere and I think I saw like one cloud. With smiles on our face from all the vitamin D we left the harbor at 10:00.

First sighting was a Minke Whale located North of the Green Buoy, due to their nature of being highly unpredictable and quite difficult to observe, after a few encounters we have continued our journey North.

It did not take long and we have seen the first blow on the horizon, although quite faint and pretty close to shore - we found our girl Disy - resting on the surface after all these days of feeding, this was inevitable. We have spent a mere moment with her as our captain saw another 3 Humpback Whales towards North and we did not want to wake her up.

One of the Humpback Whales (Proppy) was slowly making its way swimming North with our RIB tour and our other boat witnessed an extremely rare behavior of another, yet unknown Humpback Whale to us. Well, now it’s known, we even know the gender, because she was not very shy about showing even her genitals (Gisela, our senior guide, right away identified her as a female), rolling, sticking her huge snout out of the water, swimming under the boat over and over again, interacting with us. An absolutely otherworldly experience for anyone who saw this. Gisela said: ‘‘I have never seen anything like this!’’. And she grew up with the ocean life in her backyard. They did not keep it to themselves, so our RIB went there eventually as well and it started interacting with it as well. Absolutely unbelievable experience even for experienced guides.

In the afternoon, we went out again, and after passing Hjalteyri, humpback whales were everywhere, we were practically surrounded by them. They were showing their tails, and we even recognized again Disy among them.

We are sincerely hoping, that this curious female Humpback will stay with us and show us more of it’s impressive underwater pirouettes.
