An Incredible Day on the Fjord: Humpbacks, Porpoises, and More!
Today was one of those unforgettable days at sea. With a light northerly wind and small waves gently rocking the boat, we set sail into the crisp morning air—about 5°C—as we headed northeast from Hjalteyri. We were full of hope, and nature did not disappoint.
It wasn’t long before we spotted a blow in the distance. As we approached, we realized it was a humpback whale, and what a show it gave us! This individual displayed one of the most dynamic behaviors we can witness from these gentle giants—tail throwing.
Tail throwing, or lobtailing, is when a whale lifts its massive tail out of the water and slaps it powerfully against the surface. It can be a form of communication, a way to stun prey, or simply part of playful behavior. Today, it felt like this humpback was sharing a moment of pure energy with us. Every slap echoed across the fjord, and the sight was absolutely breathtaking.
We spent some quality time with this magnificent animal, but it wasn’t alone. Soon, we were surrounded by 3–4 humpback whales, all surfacing, breathing, and showing their flukes as they dove. It was a magical morning filled with calm seas and incredible marine life.
The afternoon brought more surprises. We didn’t have to venture far—the first blow was seen near the green buoy. After a few breaths, the whale raised its fluke high, diving gracefully into the deep. Then, another spout! A second humpback whale approached our boat, surfacing close and lifting its fluke almost as if to say hello and show off its beauty. The moment felt intimate and special.
But the show wasn’t over yet.
A group of harbour porpoises appeared near the boat, likely hunting for fish. We saw their sleek bodies rise and fall in a rhythmic “porpoising” motion across the surface. Some were even calves, swimming tightly alongside their mothers. These shy creatures don’t always stay near boats, so their presence felt like a gift.
And then—the captain spotted a minke whale! Unfortunately, this elusive individual disappeared before everyone could get a good look. But we were still surrounded by at least four humpbacks with several more blows seen in the distance. It was a day filled with life, energy, and connection to the sea.
What an amazing day on the fjord.
