Another beautiful day at Eyjafjörður! The sun and the warm weather have been giving us their best for the several past days. Today as well we got to sail at 19°C with a calm sea and a breeze that slightly cut the warm humidity. Everyone definitely got their daily dosage of vitamin D with the nearly clear sky.
The whales were also enjoying the sun. North of Svalbarðseyri we encountered our first Humpback whale of the day! It was calmly but frequently getting to the surface, indicating it having some breakfast. We let it enjoy it’s food in peace and sailed a little bit more north and encountered not one, but two more Humpback whales! First they were swimming farther away from each other, but started closing in on each other and for a while were diving together. One even gave us a rare treat by surface feeding! It is always so beautiful to see how big the lower jaw can spread.
The afternoon wasn’t lacking in the slightest. On top of seeing the same whales around the same areas, north on Svalbardðseyri and southeast of Hjalteyri, we saw some other whale species as well! They were our usual suspects. Next to Skaldjavik we saw a Minke whale popping up and enjoying life. It made it’s presence known quite a few times before going for a longer, deeper dice that makes it feel like they disappear. East of Hjalteyri we saw a small pod of Harbour porpoises. First we weren’t sure what we were seeing, as their porpoising went in the same rhythm as the waves of the sea, but then they started coming up higher and we could be sure that it was actually what we saw. All and all a wonderful day that makes you hopeful of what the next day brings!
