The fjord showed itself from it’s windy side today, but the sun was out trying to keep us warm. The day sure gave us plenty of surprises.

In the morning we encountered a Minke Whale by the green bouy. It was very quickly moving south and we followed it almost all the way back down to Svalbarðseyri. It was very active feeding and even did a lunge feed, putting it’s head all the way out of the water. As we sailed north we came across a sleeping Humpback Whale north of Hjalteyri. We got many close up encounters when it came up the breath. When it woke up it gave us a sleepy fluke goodbye. On the way south we then came across three Humpback Whales in very high speed moving towards the south. It was very impressive seeing these Humpback Whales moving fast, appearing to be on a mission. It did not stop them from taking a little break, and one of them rolled over waving it’s flippers at us.

In the afternoon we came across a Minke Whale by Svalbarðseyri again. Possibly the same one from the morning. As we started heading north we got word about Humpback Whales near Akureyri. We turned the boat around and went back south were we encountered two Humpback Whales by the dry dock in Akureryi. They were slowly moving along the shore giving us multiply close up encounters. As they continued on their way north we went south, following two other Humpback Whales, all the way to the end of the fjord. People were standing on land trying to get a look at these Humpback Whales as they were so close to the shore.

A day that definitely provided us with many different encounters.
