A light breeze, –2 °C temperatures, and steady snowfall set the scene for today’s tour south of Hrólfssker. The sea remained mostly flat, with a slight swell near the end of the fjord, providing good conditions for observation.
Harbour porpoises were seen feeding beneath flocks of seabirds, indicating dense prey activity near the surface, N Hjalteyri. Further north, S Hrólfssker saw more than ten humpback whales actively feeding. With the engine off, we drifted quietly among them as several surfaced just a few meters from the boat. This allowed for close observation of their breathing and coordinated feeding behaviour.
Such encounters highlight the productivity of Icelandic coastal waters during winter and the importance of these areas as feeding grounds for both resident and migratory marine mammals.
