The winter is still holding a grip over Akureyri, and today the snow definitely had an impact on the visibility.
In the morning, we headed out into the snow and fog, but south of Hjalteryi it cleared up, and we found a humpback whale. We thought it was gonna be another easy day, but clearly not. A snowstorm came over us, and suddenly we had very limited visibility. We almost gave up when we found it again and this time it was very clearly heading north. This time, we could follow the direction it was heading and finally get some nice encounters with it before we had to turn around.
Just like magic, during the afternoon, the wind stopped and the sun came out. It was still quite choppy, but once we made our way to Gljáin, where we found 4 Humpback whales this time. So our friend from the morning found some more humpbacks to spend the afternoon with. Since we had 4 whales around us, we didn’t have to wait 3 minutes to have one of the joining us on the surface.
