Hello everybody!
Today, the fjord was very calm, with no wind, and the rain had just stopped before we started, so the conditions were perfect.
On the morning tours, we didn’t need to go very far. Just south of the green buoy, we found two Humpback Whales, Popeye and Tripod. We spent the tour with them as they were constantly surfacing around us, so without moving around too much, we all got to enjoy them for a long time.
Then, on the afternoon tours, we found Popeye again near the town of Svalbarðseyri. We watched it a few times before heading a bit further north to keep looking for more whales. Southeast of Hjalteyri, we found three Humpback Whales. The first one we saw was Tripod again, followed by Morrigan and, finally, one of our favourite Humpback Whales, Proppy.
For our new readers, Proppy is a Humpback Whale that was first seen in Iceland in 2022 and has become a very common sight in Eyjafjörður. Proppy got its name because it was hit by a ship’s propeller in 2023. It completely recovered between June and August 2023, but the accident left a large scar on its right dorsal flank.
If you come with us to see whales and you also like birds, there are still plenty to see in the fjord. For example, we can spot Black Guillemots with their beautiful winter plumage.
