Today we sailed out in beautiful summer weather, with clear skies, sunshine, and temperatures around 15°C in the morning. As we made our way through the fjord, we enjoyed plenty of birdlife, including Northern Fulmars, Arctic Terns, ducks, and swans, making the journey out even more enjoyable.
Before long, we spotted the unmistakable blow of a Humpback whale. The whale was feeding close to Hjalteyri, not far from the shoreline. Thanks to the exceptionally calm and crystal-clear water, we were able to admire the outline of its entire body beneath the surface a truly spectacular sight.
Before each deep dive, the whale gracefully lifted its long white fluke, giving everyone on board an unforgettable view before disappearing beneath the surface. It was a fantastic encounter and a wonderful day to be out on Eyjafjörður.
On our later morning departures, we were lucky to find the same humpback whale, still in front of Hjalteyri. While waiting it to come from a dive, we spotted, just a bit southwest from it - a pod of Northern bottlenose whales! This species inhabits open ocean and can dive up to 2 hours! That’s why seeing them is always an exceptional experience! We saw them surfacing for few breaths before they dived, and then we continued watching a humpback whale. It was fluking up for every dive - a real pleasure to look! On the way back, we spotted a 3rd species! A minke whale! It was busy feeding but it surfaced very close to our boat, we even saw the little white circles on its flukes, just under the surface!
In the afternoon the wind from the north picked a little bit up, but the conditions were still fantastic! We sailed in calm waters and close to the town of Hjalteyri we spotted a minke whale, surrounded by plenty of bird life. After that we decided to explore even more our amazing fjord, the landscapes were already stunning but then we also saw a humpback whale south west of Hrisey!
What an amazing day in the fjord! :)
