The morning started with grey, rainy skies, but this didn’t stop us from having plenty of wildlife encounters! Our first sighting was a minke whale north of Svalbarðseyri, giving us some excellent views. On the way to Hjalteyri, we spotted another minke whale, but we had a feeling that something even bigger was waiting for us further north. Near Grenivík, we encountered our first humpback whale of the tour and saw its fluke twice. We then decided to explore the area around Gísláín, where our second humpback whale surprised us by surfacing incredibly close to the boat!
In the afternoon, the sun finally came out, and we sailed east of Hrísey, where we encountered another humpback whale. We were even luckier when it came incredibly close to our boat not just once, but twice! It also appeared to be waving at us, showing off its huge pectoral fins. Later in the afternoon, we saw the same whale again, and it once more approached the boat closely. It looks like this whale may become our friendly whale of the week! Since it appears to be a new individual, we need to give it a name. Do you have any suggestions?:-)
In the evening, we enjoyed a beautiful sunset as we sailed through our fjord. Once we reached the area of Gísláín, we encountered a very active humpback whale that was feeding and repeatedly showing its fluke. On our way back, north of Hjalteyri, we were also lucky to spot a few harbour porpoises!
