Hello everyone!
Today, due to strong winds coming from the north, we had to cancel our morning Express Tours. However, since we use our larger boats for the Classic Tour, we were able to go ahead as planned and headed out on our vessels, Holmasol and Ambassador.
Even though it was windy and quite cold, our adventurous guests enjoyed the view of the fjord from the outdoor decks. It took us around 40 minutes to find a Humpback whale near the town of Hjalteyri. This was a whale we know very well and, yes, of course she has a name Dísy! We know that she is a female.
At first, she was a bit tricky to observe, as she was mainly travelling north and was not showing her fluke. In the end, however, we had a very nice and close encounter with her.
As we were turning around to begin our journey back to the harbour, a small group of Harbour porpoises suddenly appeared very close to the boat. The brave guests who stayed outside until the very end were rewarded with a wonderful sight and got to see just how cute these animals are.
In the afternoon, we headed out aboard our smaller Classic Whale Watching boat, Konsul. Despite the windy conditions, with winds reaching around 10 m/s, Lenka did an amazing job and quickly found several whales.
We sailed north of Hjalteyri, where we first encountered two Humpback Whales diving together. We tried to follow them, but soon only one whale remained in the area. After some time, it surfaced very close to the boat, allowing us to admire its full beauty, including its impressive fluke.
The encounter became even more special when the whale surfaced close to the boat again. It almost felt as if the whale was following us as much as we were following it! Sometimes whales can be very curious, and this individual certainly seemed interested in us.
In the distance, we could also see several more blows from other Humpback Whales, showing just how much life there was in the fjord today. On our way back to the harbour, we were once again treated to sightings of Harbour Porpoises.
What a wonderful day out on the water!
