Today we were blessed with sunny weather, blue sky and glassy sea. We spotted a humpback whale Northwest of Hjalteyri. The humpback was our well-known individual named Poppy. It was showing very relaxed surface behaviour, had predictable 5-6 minutes’ dives and it was regularly lifting its flukes high above the surface - a real pleasure, easy to watch. There was no wind, so when our captain turned off the engine, we all enjoyed hearing its powerful majestic blows. In one moment it even came straight toward us and dived just underneath us, showing its huge white flukes. On the way back, we stopped to enjoy a pod of 5-7 harbor porpoises. We could all see them surfacing and actively swimming very close to the boat. Our captain turned off the engine again, so we even heard their blows, which sounded super cute after hearing the humbpack’s. After that we also saw a minke whale, near the Husky lodge, and had enough time to see it surfacing 3 times, with 3-4 breaths each times. On our 1pm tour, the wind picked up a bit, but we found humpback Poppy again near Hjalteyri and enjoyed watching it for a bit more.
