Sun, calm sea and WHALES!
Whale hello everyone!
In Iceland, the weather is famously unpredictable; they say if you don’t like it right now, just wait ten minutes. Well, these past days we’ve had to wait a bit longer than ten minutes for the sun to show up, but when it finally did, it felt amazing.
The morning started cloudy, but as the hours went by, the sky cleared and made room for the sun. The fjord was calm, smooth like a mirror, perfect for heading out on the water. Not long after we reached the green buoy, we spotted our first humpback whale. It was peaceful but a little tricky to watch, surfacing only briefly before diving back down again. We decided to let it be and continued sailing north.
Up in Hjalteyri, three humpbacks were waiting for us. Two of them were swimming side by side, inseparable the whole time. Funny enough, we had seen the very same pair yesterday evening; they must have become good friends in the fjord. On our way back, we even caught a quick glimpse of two more humpbacks.
Birdlife was a bit quieter today, but we still got to enjoy the company of guillemots, razorbills, and northern fulmars, who kept us entertained (and busy with our cameras).
