Eyjafjörður Whale Watching Report
Today’s adventure started under a moody northern sky, cloudy, drizzly in spirit (if not in drops), and with a chilly north wind rolling straight down Eyjafjörður. The kind of weather that makes you pull your hat a little lower, but also reminds you that nature is always in charge out here.
The whales, as always, made the chase worthwhile. Our first encounter was with a fast and elusive minke whale, the stealthy little sports car of the fjord. It kept us on our toes, darting in and out, but even in its hurry, it treated us to a spectacular sight: a few lunges through the water, feeding in its efficient, no-nonsense style.
Heading further north around Hjalteyri, things got even better. Two magnificent humpback whales appeared, calmly feeding, lifting their tails high, and showing us why they’re the undeniable stars of the fjord. There’s nothing quite like watching a humpback tail disappear into the cold waters, equal parts grace and power.
And just when we thought the show couldn’t get better, one more humpback decided to give us the grand finale: full breaches and tail slaps on the way home. Salt spray, gasps, laughter, that’s what memories are made of.
The weather may have been grey, but the day ended on a bright note, a quick stop by the famous hot water waterfall. No rain, just steaming falls and smiles all around.
A chilly day, a challenging search, but in the end Eyjafjörður once again delivered unforgettable moments.
