Wednesday, 17 September
The first real day of autumn arrived today, together with snow on the mountains. The morning was cold, with a bit of rain, but by the afternoon, the sun had come out, giving us a little warmth.
On the first tour of the day, we didn’t have to go far; around the green buoy, we found a Humpback Whale. It was very active, covering big distances while feeding, so it really kept us on our toes. But it showed its beautiful fluke every time it went down for a dive, indicating it was diving deep. It had a very distinct mark on the left-hand side of its fluke. The fluke is like a fingerprint for humpback whales, helping us distinguish between different individuals. Its dorsal fin was also very slim and looked like a hook.
In the afternoon, we found the same Humpback whale as in the morning in a similar spot. We then headed North, hoping to see something new. When we were almost turning around, we saw another Humpback East of Hjalteyri. Before we could head there, a third Humpback came up right next to our boat. We enjoyed its company and took some nice pictures before heading back to Akureyri.
